چکیده

Being able to effectively measure the notion of fairness is of vital importance, as it can provide insight about the formation and evolution of complex patterns and phenomena, such as social preferences, collaboration, group structures and social conflicts. This paper presents a comparative study for quantitatively modelling the notion of fairness in one-to-many resource allocation scenarios — i.e. one provider agent has to allocate resources to multiple receiver agents. For this purpose, we investigate the efficacy of six metrics and cross-validate them on crowdsourced human ranks of fairness annotated through a computer game implementation of the one-to-many resource allocation scenario. Four of the fairness metrics examined are well established metrics of data dispersion, namely standard deviation, normalised entropy, the Gini coefficient and the fairness index. The fifth metric, proposed by the authors, is an ad-hoc context-based measure which is based on key aspects of distribution strategies. The sixth metric, finally, is machine learned via ranking support vector machines (SVMs) on the crowdsourced human perceptions of fairness. Results suggest that all ad-hoc designed metrics correlate well with the human notion of fairness, and the context-based metrics we propose appears to have a predictability advantage over the other ad-hoc metrics. On the other hand, the normalised entropy and fairness index metrics appear to be the most expressive and generic for measuring fairness for the scenario adopted in this study and beyond. The SVM model can automatically model fairness more accurately than any ad-hoc metric examined (with an accuracy of 81.86%) but it is limited by its expressivity and generalisability.

A Fairness Model for Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks

In wireless networks many nodes contend for available resources creating a challenge in resource allocation. With shared resources, fairness in allocation is a serious issue. Fairness metrics have been defined to measure the fairness level of resource decisions in allocations. Therefore, fairness metrics significantly influence network and node performances emphasizing the need for due diligenc...

A New Fairness Index and Novel Approach for QoS-Aware Resource Allocation in LTE Networks Based on Utility Functions

Resource allocation techniques have recently appeared as a widely recognized feature in LTE networks. Most of existing approaches in resource allocation focus on maximizing network’s utility functions. The great potential of utility function in improving resource allocation and enhancing fairness and mean opinion score (MOS) indexes has attracted large efforts over the last few years. In this p...

Cross-layer Packet-dependant OFDM Scheduling Based on Proportional Fairness

This paper assumes each user has more than one queue, derives a new packet-dependant proportional fairness power allocation pattern based on the sum of weight capacity and the packet’s priority in users’ queues, and proposes 4 new cross-layer packet-dependant OFDM scheduling schemes based on proportional fairness for heterogeneous classes of traffic. Scenario 1, scenario 2 and scenario 3 lead r...

Cooperative Benefit and Cost Games under Fairness Concerns

Solution concepts in cooperative games are based on either cost games or benefit games. Although cost games and benefit games are strategically equivalent, that is not the case in general for solution concepts. Motivated by this important observation, a new property called invariance property with respect to benefit/cost allocation is introduced in this paper. Since such a property can be regar...

Cycle Time Optimization of Processes Using an Entropy-Based Learning for Task Allocation

Cycle time optimization could be one of the great challenges in business process management. Although there is much research on this subject, task similarities have been paid little attention. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to optimize cycle time by minimizing entropy of work lists in resource allocation while keeping workloads balanced. The idea of the entropy of work lists comes fr...
